Iranian athletes claim golds in New Zealand

TEHRAN - Iran’s Peyman Nasiri and Abdolreza Jokar won gold medals in the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Abdolreza Jokar won gold with a throw of 20.96m in the men’s F52/53 javelin. Silver went to Henrik Plank from Slovenia with 17.23m and Mexican Mauro Maximo de Jesus finished in third place with a throw of 19.57m.
Peyman Nasiri set a championship record in the men’s 1500m T20 with a time of 3:57.10secs, two seconds to the better of Tim Page of Australia who claimed silver with a time of 3:59.22. Mncedi Khanti from South Africa won bronze with 4:03.13.
Erfan Hosseini finished second with a throw of 61.48m in the men’s javelin F13 and set a world record but had to bow to China’s Pinkie Zhu for the gold medal. Zhu (F12) threw 61.90m was enough to head the Iranian. Serbia’s Milos Garlic (60.81) claimed bronze.
The 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships has brought together more than 1,000 athletes from 70 countries.
Iran has competed in the event with 10 participants. The event will run to January 30.
The competition will serve as a qualifier for the 2012 Paralympics in London
